In our view, 2007 was the year the general public started taking a keen interest in the Climate Change issue. It was a culmination of several significant events. It was a year with significant press from the popularity of Al Gore's Academy Award-winning documentary "An Inconvenient Truth". It seemed wherever Al Gore spoke in Canada, the venues were sold out in record time.

It was also a year when David Suzuki traveled the nation on a 50-city tour called "If you were the Prime Minister...". The thoughts and ideas of Canadians were collected and brought to our Prime Minister to show that we are concerned about the environment.

The first Canadian green living show was held in Toronto with over 20,000 attendees, more than 250 exhibitors, and many inspirational speakers.

One of the most significant global events was when scientists from over 100 countries worked together on the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded that climate change is "very likely" the result of human produced greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, this work was awarded the 2007 Nobel Pace Award in conjunction with Al Gore for their work in educating the world about climate change.

2007 was the year I created the Carbon Diet website as a community sustainability initiative by our business. Wooden It Be Nice is family run, and as a family, we’re concerned about the environment.

At the time there were a lot of suggestions in the media about what people could do to take action on climate change, but as time went on, there became more and more confusion on which actions would produce the best results and which were more important.

Through the action of our own family, we recognized that this was a complex issue. There isn't a "silver bullet" and it's not a black-and-white issue. It is a subject that needs to be broken down into smaller parts so people can understand each portion of the issue and what they can do.

Within one year, we were able to reduce our family’s carbon dioxide emissions by more than 35%. Our experience and research made us realize there is an opportunity to teach others how they can make a difference. We have build this website as a sustainability project to share practical solutions for making changes for the better.

Thank you for taking an interest in sustainability.
